SILVER SPRING, Md. - Following January's devastating landslide that occurred in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, killing more than 900 people, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) immediately provided humanitarian support to victims.
To provide this assistance, ADRA mobilized volunteers and resources to support some of the worst affected communities, distributing 71 tons of food, 150,000 liters of drinking water, more than 4,000 personal hygiene kits, mattresses, bedding sheets, towels, blankets and cookware sets, to hundreds of families.
Following the disaster, ADRA Brazil deployed a team to assess the situation in order to survey the most urgent needs in the affected areas. ADRA Brazil initiated support from ADRA's worldwide network, and received a $50,000 grant from the United States Embassy in Brasilia to support families with urgent needs.
"It was clear that this was a major disaster and would need much more assistance," explained Paulo Lopes, country director of ADRA Brazil. "The response from our network was overwhelming. Through ADRA International, we received a $135,000 grant from the United States Agency of International Development, Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA)."
The tragedy of Rio is considered one of the largest Brazil has ever experienced, largely affecting the municipalities of Nova Friburgo, Petrópolis and Teresópolis region. As a result of the landslide, 900 were left dead, 400 were reported missing, and thousands of others were instantly homeless. According to the United Nations, the landslides in Rio are amongst the 10 largest in the world. ADRA's four and a half month response supported more than 20,000 people, (5,000 households) in the worst affected areas of Nova Friburgo, Teresopolis, Areal, Sumidouro and São José do Vale do Rio Preto.
