Period covered by this Final Report: 20 December 2005 to 28 February, 2006.

History of this Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF)-funded operation:

- CHF 25,093 (USD 19,379 or EUR 16,215) allocated from the Federations DREF on 18 December, 2005 to respond to the needs of this operation.

- This operation was expected to be implemented in 1 month , and completed by 18 January, 2006.

Nevertheless, the distribution of items was done in February 2006, as it takes time to finalise legal procedures and tender and choose a supplier. In line with Federation reporting standards, the DREF Bulletin Final Report (narrative and financial) was due 90 days after the end of the operation (by 31 May, 2006).

The International Federation undertakes activities that are aligned with its Global Agenda, which sets out four broad goals to meet the Federation's mission to "improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity".

Global Agenda Goals:

- Reduce the numbers of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters.

- Reduce the number of deaths, illnesses and impact from diseases and public health emergencies.

- Increase local community, civil society and Red Cross Red Crescent capacity to address the most urgent situations of vulnerability.

- Reduce intolerance, discrimination and social exclusion and promote respect for diversity and human dignity.

Background and Summary

The heavy rainfall affected the western part of Bosnia and Herze govina (BiH) in the period from the 6th to the 9th of December, 2005. The most affected areas were in Una Sana Canton (municipalities of Bihac, Bosanska Krupa, Sanski Most and Velika Kladusa), as well as Prijedor Region (municipalities of Prijedor and Novi Grad). In total, 950 households were affected.

Coordination

The local Red Cross organizations visited the affected areas, together with the civil protection representatives, and collected information on the assistance needed for the population.

Analysis of the operation - achievements and impact

Emergency relief (food and basic non-food items):

The main objective of this operation was to provide basic food and hygiene items for approximately 950 households in December 2005 (for one month).

The beneficiaries of assistance were the most vulnerable categories of the population, which can be outlined as follows: persons over 60 (elderly households) with monthly income less then EUR 40, self-supporting mothers, returnees and displaced persons affected by floods.

The distribution was made by the supplier to Bihac, Sanski Most, Velika Kladusa, Bosanska Krupa, Prijedor and Novi Grad. The Red Cross distributed 950 food parcels, 950 hygiene parcels and 950 jerry cans (10 litres) to the beneficiaries.
