Quantifiable humanitarian impacts since the start of the Lebanon crisis 07 Aug 2006

All agencies, in coordination with Government
of Syria (GoS) partners, have carried out and continue to carry out assessments,
which are essential to determine the real needs of people and ensure a
comprehensive response. These include:
- accessibility to water and sanitation
facilities
- personal hygiene practices
- monitoring of those affected by communicable diseases
- numbers of people suffering from chronic disease
- availability of health services and essential drugs
- nutrition status of children under-5
- nutrition status of pregnant/lactating women
- number of pregnant/lactating women
- number of women of reproductive age
With Government and NGO partners, UN agencies have provided humanitarian assistance to the displaced Lebanese in Syria (Persons of Concern - POCs):

- General health - Reproductive health - Medical logistics | - UNICEF is supporting the Ministry
of Health (MoH) immunization campaigns, which began 30 July in all
public sites: 1) polio/MMR/meningitis for all under 5s, and, 2) measles
for 5-15s
- UNICEF has provided 150,000 capsules of vitamin A to be distributed to all POC children during the immunization campaign to boost their immune system - UNFPA has provided emergency obstetric kits for pregnant women and newborns - safe blood transfusion kits, drugs and supplies for STI prevention. These will cover 120,000 people for the next 3 months - A further shipment of obstetric reproductive health kit medical supplies covering 150,000 people is expected to arrive early next week - UNFPA has provided the Syrian Family Planning Association with a mobile clinic, a gynaecologist, and an ultra sound machine, as well as other mobile health services, essential drugs, contraceptives and fuel/maintenance for the mobile clinic and vehicles. So far this has reached more than 2,000 people, including 40 pregnant women and 80 women treated for reproductive tract infections - UNFPA is supporting the MoH in health care for women and newborns by making available reproductive health emergency kits - WHO has supported the MoH in finalizing an Early Warning System for outbreak detection and early response - now approved, this should be functioning with one week - WHO and Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) have finalized a list of high priority drugs needed in POC sites and a delivery system - WHO is supporting the National Relief Agency in developing a system for logistical tracking and management of medical donations |
| Food | - Since 31 July, WFP has distributed
approximately three metric tonnes of food a day to up to 11,000
people in the Damascus area
- This part of a WFP food distribution programme aimed at providing 50,000 people with the following food items for the next 90 days: wheat and flour; pulses and lentils; vegetable oil; canned meat - 30,000 people will also receive hi-energy biscuits for seven days |
| Water/Sanitation | - UNFPA provided 12,000 personal
hygiene kits to the POC sites supervised by the SARC and other GoS
partners. An additional 8,000 kits are on their way, and ICRC are
providing a further 2,000
- UNICEF has provided hygiene supplies to schools and POC sites serving at least 6,000 people - UNFPA and UNICEF are providing assistance to ensure that women and girls have privacy and secure toilet facilities - Hygiene promotion activities are being carried out by UN agencies and partners to reduce the spread of disease - UNICEF has established emergency latrines at the Dabbusseya border point for thousands of incoming and outgoing displaced persons |

Non-Food Items | - UNHCR has set up a warehouse
in Damascus. An agreement with Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN)
to open another warehouse in Homs is being developed. UNHCR is using
a warehouse in Aleppo that has been provided by the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.
UNHCR is in the process of identifying a warehouse in Tartous.
- UNHCR has distributed 1,000 tents, 10,864 mattresses, 8,890 blankets, and 1,473 kitchen sets to POCs in Syria - UNRWA is addressing the needs of more than 2,000 Palestinians from Lebanon, including 1,612 who are being accommodated at eight UNRWA schools in Yarmouk, Damascus - UNRWA is coordinating delivery of NFIs from UN agencies and private donors to these communities |
| Protection | - UNHCR is carrying out border monitoring
and assessing the situation in Damascus, Homs, Aleppo and Tartus to identify
accomodation sites and host families in need, in close cooperation with
SARC and the GoS
- UNICEF, with the Movimondo NGO and SARC, designed a psycho-social assessment tool, and 10 SARC volunteers have been trained in how to use it - 60 training manuals of psycho-social games and activities for children/adolescents in emergencies have been distributed to the AKDN to support training by Movimondo - Specific activities are being designed by UNFPA in consultation with concerned local partners to secure safe and protected environment and treatment of cases of gender-based violence(GBV). |
| Education | - UNICEF has provided recreational kits
that have benefited at least 2,500 children
- UNICEF is also providing recreational kits to Pioneer camp resource rooms now being set up in every camp |

GoS on support to design emergency response coordination and communications
mechanisms
- UN agencies in Syria supported by OCHA are working with GoS and NGO partners in Sectors, to ensure effective coordination of assessments, relief planning and delivery |
