Summary
Two tetanus cases were reported from Ciamis district, with 1 fatality.

WHO experts will support West Java Provincial Health office (PHO) in conducting communicable disease surveillance activities in Ciamis District.

Ciamis and Tasikmalaya regencies will soon begin construction of temporary accommodation for up to 2000 people.

IDPs need psychosocial support, environmental health support and communicable diseases control support.

Background

On 17 July 2006 a 7.7 magnitude (USGS) earthquake occurred 20 to 48.6 miles under sea level, 100 miles south of Java Island. The epicentre was 92:95 - 94:86 latitude and between 107 347 to 107 732 longitude. Waves two to seven metres high, travelling as far as two kilometres inland, followed the earthquake. There were several aftershocks too. Affected areas included: West Java Province - Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Sukabumi, and Garut District; Central Java Province - Cilacap, Kebumen and Banyumas District; and Yogyakarta Province - Gunung Kidul and Bantul District.

Preliminary analysis showed that Bulak Laut in the south of Ciamis was the worst affected area, hit by waves 7.67 meters high. In Central Java, Widara Payung was hit by 6.7-meter waves and at Pameungpeuk, Garut, they measured 5.2 meters.

Current Situation

The Ministry of Health (MOH) reports that approximately 668 people died, 65 are missing and 9299 are in-treatment because of the disaster.

Two tetanus cases were reported in Ciamis District including one fatality.

Air service is operating between Pangandaran and Jakarta by Suzy Air (Cessna aircraft). Flights depart Pangandaran at 2:00 p.m. daily and depart Jakarta (Halim Perdanakusuma Airport) at 3:30 p.m. daily.

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)

As of 31 July, MOH reported that the number of IDPs is 5172 people.

Ciamis and Tasikmalaya regencies will soon begin construction of temporary accommodation for up to 2000 people. The head of West Java's spatial planning and housing office, Jan Mulyana, reported the shelters will cost Rp 11.35 billion (US$1.19 million) and will be funded by both regional and state budgets.

The hardest hit area of Ciamis will receive 160 of the blocks, and the remainder will be built in Tasikmalaya. Each block will consist of 12 rooms capable of accommodating 60 people. They can be used for up to two years.

Priority Needs

Barracks with improved sanitation facilities need to be completed for relocation to begin.

IDPs need psychosocial support, environmental health support and communicable diseases control support.

Government

PHO of West Java continues to conduct a Rapid Health Assessment in Ciamis District.

Ciamis DHO is conducting a measles and TT immunization programme. Details are as follows:

WHO Action

Immunization and Communicable Diseases Control (CDC)

500 vials of anti-tetanus serum (ATS) 20 000 IU, 500 vials of tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG) 210 IU and 50 vials of ATS 1500 have been sent to the affected area.

WHO is supporting West Java PHO in conducting CDC surveillance activities in Ciamis District and will deploy one CDC expert to the affected area to support the activities.
