The Federation's mission is to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity. It is the world's largest humanitarian organization and its millions of volunteers are active in over 185 countries.

In Brief

This Bulletin is being issued for information only, and reflects the situation and the information available at this time. The Federation is not seeking funding or other assistance from donors for this operation at this time.

The Situation

The Republic of Korea National Red Cross (KNRC) continues to work in close cooperation with the government and other organizations to meet the needs of thousands of families affected by torrential rains that commenced on 14 July in the Republic of Korea, particularly affecting Gangwon, Kyonngi provinces and Seoul. To date, more than 520 mm of rain fell many cities in Gangwon province.

The floods left 25 people dead and 21 people missing. 4,630 people were affected by the floods. 2,182 people are being housed in temporary shelters after 614 houses were destroyed and 2,180 houses were inundated. Heavy rainfall also cut off 181 roads and swept away 2,239 hectare of farmland.

Red Cross and Red Crescent action

Under the coordination of the KNRC national headquarters, local chapters have provided 22,032 food and non-food item sets, 10,772 kg of laundry services, 22,032 meals and medical services to communities affected by heavy rains and floods which commenced 14 July.

A total of 3,761 volunteers and 624 staff members have been actively involved in the operation. To meet the extensive needs of beneficiaries, the KNRC operated 12 mobile kitchens that have now been reduced to two.

As of the final week of July, the national society completed major emergency relief operations and is transitioning into its recovery operation. Major activities in recovery include working with affected communities to clean their houses, shops and farmland as well as provide psychological support. As for the emergency operations, KNRC volunteers and staff members from less-affected areas are being mobilized for the recovery operations.

The International Federation undertakes activities that are aligned with its Global Agenda, which sets out four broad goals to achieve the Federation's mission to "improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity".

Global Agenda Goals:

- Reduce the numbers of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters.

- Reduce the number of deaths, illnesses and impact from diseases and public health emergencies.

- Increase local community, civil society and Red Cross Red Crescent capacity to address the most urgent situations of vulnerability.

- Reduce intolerance, discrimination and social exclusion and promote respect for diversity and human dignity.

All International Federation assistance seeks to adhere to the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) in Disaster Relief and is committed to the Humanitarian Charter and Minimum Standards in Disaster Response (Sphere) in delivering assistance to the most vulnerable.
