Operations

The Integrated Demining Capacity (IDC) team of the MACC deployed to Sector West, Badme area and Sector Center, Tsorena area.The Route Clearance Team also deployed to Sector Centre, within the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) conducting road clearance operations in the Adihageray area. The teams cleared an area of 45649 sq. m. and 55.8 kms of road in the area.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team based on the Eritrean side carried out office based duties, refurbished the MACC museum and EOD store as well as participated in training activities.The EOD team based in Ethiopia conducted internal Battle area Clearance (BAC) training during the week and prepared its team members for future operations.

The MACC Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams along with the route clearance and integrated demining teams destroyed 203 unexploded ordnance items, 2 AP mines and declared 177 items free from explosives (FFE) had been reported in the past month.

A MACC investigation team conducted an investigation in to a UXO incident that occurred at approximately 18:00 hours on 15 September 2006, approximately 1.5 kms North from Grat Mariam- Maikokah road. Two children were involved in the incident. According to the report received, a 15 year old child was injured in the accident.

The incidence happened after he hit the device using a stone several times. The fuse exploded severing three fingers of his left hand, injuring his left leg, and the front side of his face. First the local militia evacuated the victim to their camp, however, due to the severity of the wounds the child was evacuated to Barentu for better medical treatment.

The team recommended that Mine Risk Education (MRE) activities should be conducted, particularly to the children of the Grat Mariam area and large MRE posters and leaflets should be distributed to schools of the surrounding areas.

The Quality Assurance (QA) team deployed to Sector Center, Egri Mekel Minefiled and Investigated a mine incident that occurred on 22 September 2006. A Preliminary Investigation Report (PIR) has been compiled.

Mine Risk Education

The Mine Risk Education (MRE) Teams of the MACC deployed to Sector West, Shilalo area, and Sector Center, Tserona area.

The Mine Risk Education (MRE) cell in Asmara conducted MRE training to 155 UNMEE military contingent members of Indian Battalion.

During the first part of 2006 the MRE teams briefed local people, children, from different age groups and gender, More than 22,428 people in the Temporary Security Zone (TSZ) received MRE awareness training.
