Brussels, 10 November 1998 - The
European Commission has given the green light for humanitarian aid projects
in Azerbaijan (ECU 500,000), India (ECU 500,000), Kenya (ECU 75,000) and
Chad (ECU 300,000). The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian
Office (ECHO), will enable non-governmental organisations to carry out
short-term projects.
Azerbaijan aid for earthquake survivors (ECU 500,000)
This aid will enable Oxfam (UK) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to respond to a government appeal for help in providing shelter for those left homeless after an earthquake in July.
India aid for flood victims (ECU 500,000)
Some eight million people have been affected by flooding in northern India. This funding will enable the IFRC to provide shelter, clean drinking water and emergency food aid for those worst hit.
Kenya disaster preparedness, aid to Nairobi bomb victims(ECU 75,000)
The IFRC is refurbishing the Kenya Red Cross disaster preparedness stocks after the bomb that left 255 dead and 5,000 injured in August. It is also providing social and psychological assistance for survivors and relatives.
Chad aid for flood victims (ECU 300,000)
The rainy season has been catastrophic for city of N'Djamena. The urban poor on the outskirts of the city have been hardest hit. CARE International is helping to clean up, and has organised a camp for 2,000 homeless victims.
