Belgrade, 10 May 2011 – The Ministry of the Interior stated today that in this year's UN report on progress in the field of disaster risk reduction, Serbia will be indentified as an example of good regulations in this field owing to the Law on emergency situations which provided a basis for introduction of an integrated protection and rescue system.

At the Third Session of the UN Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held on 9-12 May in Geneva, Serbia is represented by Assistant Minister of the Interior and Head of the Sector for Emergency Situations Predrag Maric.

Serbia is also one of the countries with the largest number of cities and municipalities participating in the global UN campaign "Making cities resilient: My city is getting ready", which aims to strengthen the capacity of local communities in disaster risk reduction.

At the meeting in Geneva UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will present the Global report on progress which the states made in reducing disaster risk, in line with the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005-2015, the UN Planning Document, adopted by 168 countries, including Serbia.

The global platform brings together government leaders from around the world, representatives of international organisations and private sector with the aim of exchanging information and building partnerships in all sectors in order to promote action to reduce disaster risk through better communication and coordination among interested parties.

This year’s event in Switzerland gathers over 2,500 representatives.
