(Tokyo, 15 March 2011) - Below is the text of a letter sent electronically to all Global Compact business participants on 15 March from Georg Kell, Executive Director, UN Global Compact and Toshio Arima, Chairman, Global Compact Network Japan:

On 11 March, the nation of Japan experienced one of the most catastrophic disasters in its history. We are shocked and saddened by the images that are emerging and the unfolding magnitude of the crisis. On behalf of the United Nations Global Compact and the Global Compact Network Japan, we want to express our deep concern and sympathy to the people of Japan, particularly those who have lost family and friends and those who continue to suffer.

With over 10,000 people estimated to be missing in northeast Japan and half a million people currently displaced from their homes, there is an urgent need for assistance. In Japan, resources and relief are being mobilized to the affected areas, but the scale of the event calls for additional support. The international business community can play an important role.

For participants wishing to support relief and humanitarian efforts, we recommend making a financial contribution to the Japan Platform - an established emergency humanitarian aid organization comprised of Japanese NGOs, businesses and Government entities which was created to support refugees and disasters worldwide.
