Calls to Radio Ergo’s audience feedback platform this week (29 September to 5 October 2022) included a sizeable number of people reporting rainfall in their areas and sharing their hopes of improvements, notably in parts of Somaliland, Galmudug, and a few from Kismayo. However, the majority of callers spoke of no rainfall and worsening drought conditions with lack of water, bare land, dead or dying livestock, displacement, food shortages and high prices. Many callers, including some saying they were IDPs, complained of lack of aid. The following summarises the calls by theme.

Rainfall and hope – callers in several parts of Togdher in Somaliland said they had received some rainfall and were doing better, with water and some grazing now available. A few in Sanag and other unnamed parts of Somaliland also welcomed rainfall and hoped the drought would be behind them. A caller in Garowe said the rain had cooled them down, although another in Eyl said it was little and they prayed for more. Callers in various parts of Galmudug also welcomed some rainfall whilst some said it was scanty and expressed concerns about the drought that prevailed in other areas. A female caller in Adado said their livestock were recovering and were giving much more milk. Two callers in Kismayo also reported receiving rain.

WASH and Drought – in Togdher, as many people reported continuing drought and water shortage in their areas as those who had reported rain. In Sanag, a female caller said their lives were becoming very difficult with drought and rising prices and they needed aid. A female caller near the Ethiopian border said the men had migrated to follow the rain and those left behind could barely afford food. She asked for help. Callers in Bari and Nugal said they faced continuing drought. A caller in Galkayo said the wells were dry and another in Hobyo said there were no trees or vegetation. A caller in Abudwak said the land was bare. Another in Galmegaag said they had no water or fodder and had been neglected by government and aid agencies. In Baidoa, a farmer said he had dug a 12 metre well but needed a generator to access the water. A caller in Jilib, Middle Juba, said they were suffering and had no aid delivered to their area. A caller in Kismayo said their livestock were starving.

Aid – a caller in Bali-alanle, Togdher, said WFP aid was being diverted by local authority officials using their vehicles. IDPs in Galkayo, Mudug, and El-jalle,
Hiran, said they faced food shortage and other hardships and called for aid. Callers in Hiran were concerned by the continuing conflict as well as the drought hardships and wanted intervention. A caller in Baidoa said they faced food and water shortage and had received no aid due to unfairness and politicised aid distribution.
