The island nation of Vanuatu has the highest disaster risk worldwide from natural hazards ranging from cyclones to volcanoes. Human activities, including rapid urbanisation, increase people vulnerability to displacement. Vanuatu's efforts to prevent and respond to the issue, however, are an example of good practise.

This paper outlines the drivers, scale and risk of disaster displacement in Vanuatu; its financial impact; and the country's capacity to prevent and respond to the issue. It also includes a case study on the impacts of displacement on housing, livelihoods, education and health linked with the 2017/2018 volcanic eruptions on Ambae Island.
