Emergency Overview and Response

In southern Madagascar, while food assistance provided by WFP played a key role in averting catastrophe in 2021, the compounding effects of prolonged and consecutive droughts, poor crop production, impacts of cyclones, war in Ukraine and COVID-19 continue to be causes of concern for food security and malnutrition.

The situation remains very fragile, although it has improved compared to April 2021, with a decrease in the number of people classified as IPC Phase 4 (Emergency). Nevertheless, from April to August 2022, 33% of the population in the Grand Sud remains highly food insecure (IPC 3+), including 122,000 people in IPC 4 (Emergency), and 925,000 in IPC 3 (Crisis).

In May, WFP delivered life-saving assistance (through General Food Distribution and Cash Transfers) to 785,761 people in the southern districts.

As part of WFP’s strategy to couple general food distributions with prevention of moderate acute malnutrition activities, 155,500 children aged 6 to 59 months and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) have received nutritional supplements in May. In addition, 39,400 children aged 6 to 59 months have been treated for moderate acute malnutrition.
