Background

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) was adopted at a time when the Arab region was witnessing unprecedented population movements. Following its endorsement by 20 Arab States, the guiding principles and objectives of GCM have become a cornerstone of national frameworks, regional cooperation and partnerships on migration governance in the Arab region. The first Arab regional review highlighted common areas for action, and allowed Governments to make a preliminary assessment of progress in implementing GCM. The inaugural International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), which will be held in New York from 17 to 20 May 2022, offers an opportunity to build on this momentum to share good practices, promote innovative approaches, and foster multi-stakeholder partnerships.
