Operational Updates

  • In December, WFP continued supporting Nicaragua's emergency response posthurricanes Eta and Iota by delivering 1,418 mt of take-home food rations for 75,366 families (a total of 376,830 people) in some of the most hurricane-affected areas. These food packages aim to support food security during the holiday period, when schools are closed, and children do not have access to regular school meals. This relieves the economic burden for families who have to provide an additional meal for children while protecting the nutritional gains of the school feeding programme.

  • On December, WFP and the Nicaraguan Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA for its Spanish acronym) delivered productive vouchers to 12,000 people in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region (RACCN for its Spanish acronym) and Jinotega.
Vouchers included bean, vegetables and plantain seeds and plants, as well as bio inputs. Additional vouchers were delivered to 1,500 beneficiaries as a part of the new partnership between WFP and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). These vouchers support the recovery of livelihoods in areas affected by adverse climate conditions, with a strong focus on indigenous populations, which represent 60 percent of all beneficiaries.

  • As a part of WFP’s capacity strengthening activities with the Ministry of Women (MINIM for its Spanish acronym), it was completed a technical and financial report on the execution of the 2021 WFP-MINIM Annual Operational Plan, which shed light on the positive results of the partnership.

  • Nicaragua Country Office received the visit of the Regional Director and WFP’s Chief of Staff in early December. This was the Regional Director’s first visit to Nicaragua, so she was introduced to WFP staff, partners, and national authorities. This was a great opportunity to visit projects in field offices and observe the needs being addressed by WFP.
