EU supports Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Montenegro in combating floods

Due to heavy rainfalls the Republic of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro are suffering from severe flooding. The three countries have activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

On 1st of December, Albania activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism requesting wooden boats, rubber boats, tents, water pumps, helicopters and other assets. Several Participating States have responded to this request for assistance.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, massive floods have affected the entire territory. The ECHO Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) received a request for assistance on 7 December from the civil protection authorities of the country.

The MIC has deployed a Liaison Officer in order to establish contacts with the civil protection authorities and to get a clear overview of the situation and needs regarding the floods. Several Participating States have responded to this request for assistance.

Montenegro is also suffering from massive floods on its entire territory. On 8 December, Montenegro activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism requesting among others things water pumps, mud water pumps, tents winterised, power generators, sandbags and blankets.

The MIC is reinforcing the EU Delegation in Podgorica with one staff member, arriving early afternoon on 10 December to liaise with local authorities.

Several Participating States have responded to this request for assistance.
