MERCY Malaysia has deployed another team from Kuala Lumpur in continuation of their relief efforts in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia.

Led by Senior Programme Officer for Relief Operations Muhammad Said Alhudzari Ibrahim, the second team will be bringing with them 240 water purification sachets to support the water needs of the flood survivors, and a Primary Healthcare (PHC) Kit so that basic health services can be provided to the displaced population there.

"The beneficiaries will be able to have access to drinkable water with the use of these sachets as clean potable water is usually in short supply in the event of floods," said Muhammad Said.

"For medical relief work, our volunteer doctors and nurses have responded positively to our call and will be in the northern region to provide basic healthcare services. We are now acquiring the supply of necessary medication for this purpose," he added.

"On 3 November 2010, we distributed 900 hygiene kits at three evacuation centres in Mukim Jitra and Mukim Naga in Kedah. We are currently looking to purchase more hygiene kits which we hope to distribute to those in need over the weekend," said Muhammad Said.

Meanwhile, MERCY Malaysia Northern Region Chapter representative, Major Haji Anuar Abd Hamid, is looking into alternative items for the hygiene kits.

"Many evacuees that we met at the evacuation centres asked us to consider putting detergents into the kit which they can use in their flood cleanup efforts. Apart from detergents, we are looking at other items that are relevant to the needs of the beneficiaries," said Major Haji Anuar.

Currently, each hygiene kit contains items such as tooth paste, tooth brush, comb, soap, shampoo, slippers, towel, sanitary pads, undergarment, and pail. The kit will enable flood survivors maintain good personal hygiene and mitigate the spread of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea.
