Return from Iran

According to the Border Monitoring Team of the Directorate of Refugees and Repatriation (DoRR), a total of 16,175 Afghans returned from Iran through the Nimroz (Milak) and Herat (Islam Qala) borders between 22-28 November 2020, a 36% decrease from the previous week (25,155). 10,265 persons returned voluntarily and 5,910 were deported. New COVID-19 related lockdown restrictions in Iran have had an impact on overall returns. Since 01 January 2020, the total number of undocumented returnees from Iran is 783,405 individuals. IOM provided post-arrival humanitarian assistance to 990 (6%) undocumented Afghans at the IOM Transit Centers in Herat and Nimroz during the past week. 2020 is on track to become the largest ever return year on record for undocumented Afghan migrants with the total from Iran already exceeding the 773,000 migrants that returned in 2018.
