COVID-19 Update Situation Report No. 7 As of 21 September 2020

This report is produced by the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Mozambique covering the period from 07 August to 21 September 2020.


  • The State of Emergency enacted by H.E. President Nyusi on 08 August ended on 06 September;
  • On 04 September, H.E. President Nyusi declared a Situation of Public Calamity with a red alert, the maximum level of warning which will last indefinitely;
  • In the first phase of easing restrictions, the majority of Higher Education Institutions were permitted to reopen for in-person teaching on 18 August following the approval by health authorities of adequate water supply and sanitation systems to prevent the spread of COVID-19;
  • Additionally, on 15 September the reopening of beaches, training of football teams in Moçambola (the top Mozambican football league), and athletes and sports teams with international competitions began;
  • COVID-19 transmission in Maputo City was been declared as community transmission as it becomes the epicenter of the outbreak accounting for 81% of total cases in Mozambique;
  • The Ministry of Health (MISAU) launched an epidemiological survey in the city of Matola to gain a better understanding of the spread of COVID-19; and
  • According to MISAU between 07 – 13 September, there were 9,957 COVID-19 tests conducted with a 8% positive test rate, in which 50% of positive cases were asymptomatic. 345 people recovered and 8 people died from COVID-19 during this period.
