Child protection in the context of the coronavirus “COVID-19 can quickly change the context in which children live. Quarantine measures such as school closures and restrictions on movements disrupt children's routine and social support while also placing new stressors on parents and caregivers who may have to find new childcare options or forgo work.

Stigma and discrimination related to COVID-19 may make children more vulnerable to violence and psychosocial distress”The child protection issues and needs of children preceding the Covid -19 pandemic may not necessarily remain the same and could exacerbate the existing issues; the evolving situation due to this current pandemic may create altogether new circumstances in the lives of children and their parents/caregivers, requiring different methods of approach. These emerging scenarios will create needs and situations will which will determine the safest methods of delivery of services for vulnerable children.

Determination of service delivery methodologies, be it face-to-face case management or remote delivery, will depend on the environment of the child, which takes into consideration the level of Covid-19 risk in the area, and the severity of each case. Each individual case and the corresponding level of vulnerability should be considered. All case managers/ workers will have to determine what the best method of delivery is, in their determination of each case, in their specific locations/situations. Regardless of the service modality, the guiding principles for working with children must always be observed - i.e promote the child’s best interest, ensure their safety, appropriate confidentiality and involve the child in decision-making.

Global Child protection bodies such as the Alliance for Chid Protection in Humanitarian Action (CP Alliance)3 and the CP Area of Responsibility (AoR)4 have developed various resource materials that offer guidance on programming related to COVID-19 response, as have several regional CP sub- clusters and CP Alliance member INGOS/NGOS.

With numerous publications in circulation, case management field staff may feel overwhelmed. What field practitioners require is often a quick reference guide on the most basic of advice. This guidance is designed as a quick go-to resource for field - based practitioners in NW Syria.

This document Is based on the information from these various sources, which has been simplified for this purpose also taking into consideration the crossborder operation in North West Syria and specific needs to this context.
