KAMPALA - The United Nations World Food Programme thanked the Government of Japan today for a donation of US$4.7 million towards emergency and livelihood programmes in the Karamoja region.

Just over US$3 million will go towards emergency activities in response to drought in the region, and US$1.6 million to the Karamoja Productive Assets Programme.

"This donation will save many lives," said WFP Country Director Stanlake Samkange. "At the same time, it will help to give the people of Karamoja a means to diversify and strengthen their livelihoods. WFP is extremely grateful to the Government of Japan for this generous contribution."

WFP's emergency operation in Karamoja is part of a larger effort by WFP and the Government of Uganda to address critical needs including wasting among children and other health problems.

The Productive Assets Programme is aimed at reducing the need for food assistance. It will help avert seasonal spikes in acute malnutrition and prevent the spread of negative coping mechanisms, at the same time building community resilience and stimulating recovery through providing food or cash for work.

This is the second contribution from Japan to WFP this year. US$2.5 million was donated by Japan in February for the local purchase of maize for food insecure families, and to create community assets in Karamoja.
