In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Tunisian authorities initiated public health measures in January 2020 aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19. These measures included the closure of airports, point of entry (PoE) along land borders and maritime boundaries, as well as domestic movement restrictions and a lockdown. However, since March 15, 2020, Tunisian authorities have managed to ensure the repatriation of 25,000+ Tunisians stranded abroad, including 18,000 by air and 7,000 via land borders.

On June 4, 2020, Tunisia lifted the lockdown and on June 27, it reopened its sea, land, and air borders for foreigners, but has implemented a new entry procedure for international arrivals into the country. A color-coded system has been implemented to show which countries may enter without restrictions and which countries can enter with enhanced restrictions. This system is expected to be updated weekly. Libya and Algeria are not included in this system, and the process of land borders reopening is subject to bilateral agreements with the two countries.
