PHIVOLCS raises alert level for Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon

SORSOGON CITY, July 7, 2020, (PIA)- The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Sorsogon has raised the alert level status of Bulusan Volcano on July 6, 2020 from alert level zero to alert level no. 1 (Abnormal) in its bulletin report.

The raising of alert level status of Bulusan volcano in Bulusan town, Sorsogon province was due to its recent volcanic activity such as increasing volcanic earthquakes based from the scientific monitoring activities of PHIVOLCS Sorsogon.

PHIVOLCS on Sunday, July 5, 2020 has recorded five (5) volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours. Accordingly, this indicates that the volcano is now showing unrest beneath its summit. This activity of the volcano likewise indicates that the volcanic processes are underway beneath the edifice that may be caused by deep seated degassing of hydrothermal activity or magmatic intrusion.

In the Bulusan Volcano bulletin dated July 7, 2020, PHIVOLCS Sorsogon seismic monitoring network has recorded nineteen (19) volcanic earthquakes that are associated with weak and shallow hydrothermal or magmatic gas activity within the edifice of the volcano. There were observations and recordings also of very weak emission of white steam-laden plumes from the lower southeast vent of the volcano.

PHIVOLCS advised the local government unit (LGUs ) concerned and the public that the entry in to the Four Kilometer (4 Km.) Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited and that vigilance within the Two kilometer (2 Km) Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the South Eastern sector must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic explosion.

The Civil aviation authorities are also advised to inform pilots of various airline companies to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to all types of aircrafts. In case ash fall could happen, it can generate voluminous amount of lahar in the event of during heavy rains and residents living on the south east and the northwest sectors of the volcano must be vigilant against sudden sediment-laden stream flows.
