Bamako, 18 June 2020 - The United Nations system in Mali through MINUSMA handed over on 18 June , a first batch of 48 tons of medical material and equipment in support of the national response plan against the Covid-19 pandemic, of which 27 tons will be transported to the regions. The delivery of this first batch is part of the 300 tons planned in total. This action results from the three memoranda of understanding signed on 6 April 6 2020, which aimed to provide an integrated and quick response to the Covid-19 health crisis in Bamako and all the affected regions.

Various protective equipement and hygiene products, as well as vital medical equipment worth nearly 1,650,000,000 XOF, or 2,732,043 US dollars, were funded by MINUSMA, which will ensure their rapid delivery to the regions of Mopti, Gao, Ménaka, Taoudéni, Timbuktu and Kidal. This support from the United Nations family will boost the efficiency of national health services as well as surveillance at health and safety hotspots, including Bamako Airport for health monitoring of passengers on domestic and international flights. It will also strengthen control and surveillance in the main corridors in the hinterland. It also covers the support for the training of medical personnel and the operationalization of measures to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 in the regions of Mopti, Gao, Ménaka, Taoudéni, Timbuktu and Kidal.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and Head of MINUSMA, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, stressed that "this pandemic is everyone's concern. Without concerted efforts and unfailing solidarity, no country will succeed in eradicating the virus. It is within this dynamic that the United Nations family in Mali stands alongside the Government and the people of Mali, in a spirit of fraternity. Without a common commitment and awareness, this support will be in vain. Together we must strengthen prevention awareness and strict enforcement of the preventive measures to block the virus because it is real"

To date, United Nations support as regards the National Response Plan against Covid-19 and independent initiatives amounts to more than 13 billion CFA francs, or more than 23 million dollars. This would not have been possible without the additional contributions of several countries to the Mali Peace and Security Trust Fund.
