WASHINGTON D.C. (April 22, 2020) – On the 50th anniversary of United Nations’ Earth Day,
Food for the Hungry has signed on to the NGO Climate Compact, a pledge to urgently address environmental sustainability and the adverse effects in vulnerable communities in solidarity with the broader climate movement.
Initiated by InterAction, the NGO Climate Compact: Commitments Toward Environmental Action and Sustainability pledge is now the largest collective effort to-date of U.S.-based international NGOs addressing climate change. The compact is an initial, two-year commitment ending in 2022 to begin developing joint and individual solutions in the four key areas of:

● Education and advocacy: Improving understanding among our donors, partners, and staff of how climate issues affect the most vulnerable worldwide

● Cross-sectoral programs: Strengthening programmatic and technical expertise in creating climate-aware, environmentally-sustainable programs

● International operations at headquarters and field offices: Assessing and mitigating the organization’s own emissions, energy consumption, and mitigating waste

● Learning: Commit to learning new approaches, tools, and processes in global development to address environmental degradation.

By joining this effort, Food for the Hungry recognizes God's call to steward the relationship between humankind and the environment, addressing the negative impacts climate change is already having in our communities around the world. Climate change is contributing to the increased frequency, duration, and severity of natural disasters, and is compounding the suffering and hardships in fragile contexts as conflicts arise over dwindling natural resources.
How FH responds to our changing climate and environment will factor into the fulfillment of the organization’s vision to end all forms of human poverty.
