Highlights

• Humanitarian access continues to be a major constraint, due to the security context and government restrictions mainly in the Tillaberi and Tahoua regions. About 11,600 recently displaced people from 2,000 households are still deprived of emergency assistance in Tillaberi, since the imposition of armed escorts to the humanitarian community limited the access.

• A resurgence of attacks on schools in the Tillaberi region was reported in January 2020. Teachers are now reported to be targeted by non-state armed groups with multiple threats, leading to many of them leaving their duty station to limit risks. At the end of January, 354 schools were closed in Niger due to security reasons from which 331 in the Tillaberi region, affecting 36,852 children and 851 teachers.

• In the Maradi region, in January 2020 15 villages with a population of 17,657 comprising host communities and Nigerian refugees were certified open defecation free (ODF) through the implementation of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach started in September 2019 with UNICEF support.
This enabled the beneficiaries to gain access to hygiene promotion activities and to household sanitation facilities.

• In January 2020, the Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) conducted 18 rapid assessments (multisector and protection) in 3 regions: Diffa, Maradi and Tillaberi. The RRM partners also provided non-food items (NFI) to 1,449 displaced families (6,161 people).
