Situation
Ethiopia’s Minister of Health declared a confirmed COVID-19 outbreak on 13 March 2020. A yellow fever outbreak was declared in Ener Enor woreda of Gurage zone. Cholera outbreaks continue in SNNPR, Somalia and Oromia regions, including Chereti, Elakri, Moyale, Selamango, Zala, Shashemane woredas and Hawasa subcity and Shashemane town. Measles outbreaks continued across the country with Oromia region affected most.
Response
The FMoH with support from the EOC and partners prepared the COVID-19 EPRP. Preparedness and readiness actions started immediately including capacity assessments, adaptation of various WHO guidelines and SOP, trainings, simulation exercises, preparation of designated facilities, stocking up essential supplies and public awareness and sensitization. Health Cluster partners continued to respond to cholera, measles and yellow fever outbreaks, and IDP/returnees.
Challenges
The Health Cluster partners’ participation and contribution to COVID-19 readiness and response activities was slow. This could be due to lack of previous experience with this kind of a pandemic, and the slow evolution of the situation that could have been thought to be a problem of elsewhere. The outbreak is now here with us, so partners must rise to the occasion.
