REGIONAL SUMMARY:

The region was rocked by several earthquakes, generally centred in the south-eastern sector of the region (PHIVOLCS, BMKG). In addition, Merapi Volcano in Indonesia (BPPTKG) erupted. Fortunately, none of these geophysical hazards resulted to a disaster event. Meanwhile, scattered rain showers were detected in the southern ASEAN region and in the northern portion of Peninsular Malaysia – resulting to a landslide. In general, there was no reported disaster event in the region.

HIGHLIGHT:

On 27 March 2020, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported of a shallow (48-km depth) magnitude 6.1 earthquake south of the province of Sarangani. The reported severity of ground shaking reached as high as Intensity V in several localities. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), reported no significant impact from this earthquake. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG) reported of a second eruption of Merapi Volcano this month.

Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (BNPB) stated that there was no significant impact to the population, and that the volcano’s alert status remains at 2 on a scale of 4

HYDRO-METEO-CLIMATOLOGICAL:

The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) reported the persistence of dry weather over the Mekong sub-region.

In addition, several hotspots and smoke haze clusters were detected in several areas in the sub-region. On the other hand, the southern ASEAN region continued to experience scattered rain showers.

GEOPHYSICAL:

There were eight (8) earthquakes with magnitude 5.0 and above that occurred in Indonesia (BMKG) and the Philippines (PHIVOLCS). Meanwhile, four (4) volcanoes, including Merapi due to increased activities, in Indonesia (PVMBG) are under monitoring.

OUTLOOK:

The Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Forecast (S2S) of the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) expects an increased chance of heavy rainfall for parts of West Papua and Sulawesi (Indonesia); while drier conditions for southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, western Borneo (Indonesia & Malaysia), and the Philippines is anticipated.
