  • 9.7 million people in need of humanitarian assistance in Burkina Faso (2.2 m), Mali (4.3 m), and Niger (3.2 m)

Niger reached 472,874 beneficiaries in January and prioritised 915,343 vulnerable people for food and nutrition assistance in February

Highlights

• According to the March 2020 Cadre Harmonise (CH), 5.5 million people in the Central Sahel countries will experience crisis and emergency food insecurity (IPC phase 3-4) during the upcoming lean season (JuneAugust 2020), including 2.15 m in Burkina Faso, 1.34 m in Mali and 2 m in Niger. From March to May 2020 period, nearly 4 million people are estimated to be food insecure.

• WFP is focusing on preparedness for the COVID-19 pandemic which is already affecting West and Central Africa. The impact on food security, public health, local economies and markets, but also on WFP’s operations, will likely be significant. WFP’s operational plan will aim at being aligned with the strategic objectives of the ‘2019 Novel Coronavirus’ (2019‑nCoV): Global Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan. Amidst this international public health pandemic, WFP is focusing on: (i) Sustain (and scale-up) WFP operations; (ii) Leverage WFP expertise to enable the humanitarian and health response and; (iii) advise and support governments to maintain supply chain activities.

• WFP continued to provide emergency food and nutrition assistance to the most in need in the Central Sahel countries and reached nearly 1 million vulnerable people in Burkina Faso and Mali in February 2020. In Niger 472,874 beneficiaries were reached in January and 915,343 vulnerable people were prioritised for food and nutrition assistance in February
