556 SUSPECTED CHOLERA CASES REPORTED

In the last two months, key changes in the humanitarian landscape include new displacements, disease outbreaks, and an escalation of the desert locust infestation. Some 370,291 people were newly displaced in all regions (except Benishangul-Gumuz) since November 2019, 65 per cent of whom were as a result of conflict. Seasonal floods and drought were the other main drivers of new displacements. Oromia and Somali regions witnessed the highest number of both conflict and climate-induced displacements. Meanwhile, active cholera outbreaks are ongoing in 16 woredas across Oromia, SNNP and Somali regions, with a cumulative attack rate of 34.5 per 100,000 persons and a fatality of 1.9 per cent. Further compounding the humanitarian landscape is the desert locust infestation affecting 180 woredas. An ongoing assessment will provide an overview of the impact of the desert locust infestation on food security and livelihoods by mid-March. Most concerning would be the lack of control before the next planting season.
