  • Afghanistan is highly prone to natural disasters, the frequency and intensity of which is exacerbated by the effects of climate change, resulting in increased humanitarian needs.
  • After above average snow-accumulations in the 2019/2020 winter, climate projections indicate the risk of fast and strong snow melts for spring, associated with an increase of flash floods and river flooding. East, West, Central and South Afghanistan are high-risk regions.
  • UNOCHA which is one of DG ECHO's key partners in Afghanistan, and the Inter Cluster Co-ordination Team (ICCT) have developed a flood contingency plan, to address the most urgent needs of affected populations, in case of extreme flood events.
