Poliomyelitis in TajikistanCupdate

As of 29 April 2010, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Tajikistan had reported 171 cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), including 12 deaths, since January 2010. Of these cases, 32 have been confirmed as wild poliovirus type 1; results are pending for the remaining cases. In the majority of these cases, onset of paralysis occurred within the past 3 weeks.

Of the 32 cases of confirmed wild poliovirus, 17 are aged <2 years, 14 are aged 2C5 years, and 1 is aged 6C15 years; 66% are male; 15 had paralysis onset during March; and 17 had paralysis onset during April. Information on vaccination history is available for 21 of these cases; 2 (10%) are reported to have received <3 doses of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) and 19 (90%) received 3 of OPV
