January 11th, 2020 ― Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has initiated an emergency response to the recent displacement wave in Idlib, northern Syria, where insecurity and armed conflict affected nearly 4 million Syrians already suffering from terrible living conditions.

In Doha, QRCS’s Disaster Information Management Center (DIMC) was activated to coordinate with QRCS’s representation mission in Gaziantep, Turkey, on the situation updates. On the ground, QRCS’s medical personnel provided assistance to 177 children, 19 newborns, and 86 women. “Since the eruption of the conflict, we have been working in Syria,” said Dr. Mohamed Salah Ibrahim, Executive Director of Relief and International Development Division at QRCS. “Relief aid has been constantly provided for the affected communities in Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, and Jordan”.

He added, “In light of the recent displacement of around 41,000 Syrian families, we have intensified our efforts to secure as much aid as possible. We are driven by our firm humanitarian commitments as an active player in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement”.

Despite the efforts done by the numerous humanitarian providers operating there, he asserted, they remained insufficient to meet the critical needs of the internally displaced persons (IDPs). These include food parcels, readymade meals, heaters, blankets, heating oil, warm clothes, children’s supplies, and tarpaulins. “Through its representation mission in Turkey, QRCS is providing food and winterization aid for the benefit of 56,000 IDPs across Idlib,” Dr. Ibrahim explained.

Under the theme of #ReliefIdlib, the plan comprises four main items:

  1. Heating oil for 13,000 IDPs over two months (40 liters per family per month), at a total cost of QR 2,080,000;

  2. Food parcels consisting of local food products for 20,000 IDPs over one month, at a total cost of QR 932,000;

  3. Blankets for 15,000 IDPs, at a total cost of QR 615,000; and 4. Tarpaulins for 8,000 IDPs (two tarpaulins per family), at a total cost of QR 374,000.

Dr. Ibrahim urged all the rich in Qatar to extend help to their brothers and sisters in Syria. “The cold weather and homelessness have combined together to deepen the suffering of the vulnerable families in Syria. They have nothing to protect themselves against the freezing winter or to feed their kids”. “Helping them is a religious and humanitarian responsibility,” he stated. “The people of Qatar have always been known for generosity, benevolence, and care for those in need. In this calamity, they are expected to be there again for humanity”.

About Qatar Red Crescent (QRCS)

Established in 1978, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is a humanitarian volunteering organization that aims to assist and empower vulnerable individuals and communities without partiality or discrimination. QRCS is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which consists of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 191 National Societies. QRCS is also a member of several GCC, Arab, and Islamic organizations, such as the Islamic Committee of International Crescent and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO). In this legally recognized capacity, QRCS has access to disaster and conflict zones, thus serving as an auxiliary to the State of Qatar in its humanitarian efforts — a role that distinguishes it from other local charities and NGOs. QRCS operates both locally and internationally and has ongoing international relief and development projects in a number of countries throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe. QRCS's humanitarian actions include providing support in disaster preparedness, disaster response, risk reduction, and disaster recovery. To mitigate the impact of disasters and improve the livelihoods of affected populations, QRCS provides medical services, healthcare, and social development to local communities. It is also active at the humanitarian advocacy front. With the help of a vast network of trained, committed staff and volunteers, QRCS aspires to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity.

QRCS works under the umbrella of the seven international humanitarian principles: Humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
