IDP Response

Some 5,715 displaced families in Hudayhdah and Hajjah governorates have begun residing in recently distributed Tehama Emergency Shelter Kits (TESKs).

TESKs are an upgraded version of the Emergency Shelter Kit (ESK), with a first layer of plastic tarpaulin sheets covered by an extra layer of locally sourced palm leaves.

This serves to maintain cooler temperature inside the shelters, which is essential for IDPs living in hot and humid areas. TESKs are manufactured with reed mats produced by IDPs and host communities, helping to boost the local economy and generate income.

UNHCR partnered with HYAC to distribute assorted non-food items (NFIs) to 277 families (1,219 individuals, 78 per cent women and children) displaced by conflict in Ad Durayhimi district, in Al Hudaydah governorate.

In Al Shaab IDP community centre in Aden, UNHCR and partner NMO completed improvement works to communal kitchens. In many IDP hosting sites, the use of communal kitchens is encouraged to help prevent the risk of fire outbreaks from IDPs cooking in or near their shelters.
UNHCR and partners also distributed kitchen utensils, gas cylinders, cooking stoves and traditional ovens to IDPs living on the site.

Refugee Response

UNHCR completed the distribution of winterization cash assistance to 119 refugee and asylum-seeker families in Hudaydah. The cash allocation will help families prepare for the cold season by enabling them to purchase personal insulation and heating items to guard against harsh temperatures in their shelters.

Between 29 - 31 December 2019, refugee children aged 0 to 5 years old in Basateen neighbourhood in Aden and Kharaz Refugee Camp in Lahj received anti-polio vaccinations as part of a nationwide polio immunization campaign. The campaign, led by local health authorities and with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), aims to reach over 5.5 million children across the country.

UNHCR provided cash assistance to 20 university students (13 boys and 7 girls) from the host communities of Kharaz Refugee Camp. The cash assistance will help students cover their tuition fees. As part of the refugee response, UNHCR supports displacement-affected host community members to access basic services, including health, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, to promote overall peaceful coexistence.
