Measles

  • American Samoa: no new laboratory confirmed measles cases have been reported; however, four suspected cases are pending results from Hawaii State Laboratory. To date there have been 10 confirmed cases and no deaths reported.

  • Fiji: To date, there have been 28 confirmed cases all in the Central health division of Fiji. There have been no deaths recorded. The Central Division has also reached the goal of 95% vaccination coverage during the campaign for the target groups of 6mth-5 year olds and 19-39 year olds.

  • Kiribati: To date there have been 2 laboratory confirmed cases have been reported. There have been no fatalities recorded. Investigation of new suspected cases is ongoing, with on-site and remote technical support from WHO and UNICEF.

  • Samoa: The number of reported measles cases per day is rapidly reducing and the situation is stabilizing There have been 5,697 measles cases have been reported as of 6 January 2020, including zero in the previous 24 hours. There have been 83 measles-related deaths; 87% was under 5 years of age and 1,860 measles admissions in total; approximately 95% have recovered, been discharged, and returned home. There are 16 hospitalized currently; seven critically children in intensive care and high-dependency care units (ICU/HDU). Emergency Medical Teams (EMTs) are scaling down but some will remain into January.

  • Tonga: A total of 622 cases, including 18 admissions and zero deaths reported since the beginning of the outbreak. Case presentations reported remain to be generally mild, with 18 hospitalisations and no death. Most of the cases have been managed by home isolation and all patients have been discharged. Based on the last date of onset of cases reported in the different divisions, we see ongoing transmission in Tongatapu and Vava'u. Vaccination has been completed in the Islands of Tongatapu, Vavau'u and Ha'apai, the islands Eua and Niuatoputapu will be covered in January 2020.

  • New Zealand: There were 2 confirmed measles cases reported for Week 1/2020, bringing the total to 2185 since 1 January 2019, with 768 (35.1 %) hospitalisations. There are two ongoing outbreaks. [Source: : ESR, NZ]

Dengue

  • There are ongoing dengue outbreaks in Wallis & Futuna (Dengue serotype-2), the Kosrae and Yap States (Dengue Serotype-3) in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshal Islands (RMI) (Dengue serotype-3), Palau (Dengue serotype-3), Cook Islands (Dengue serotype-1) and French Polynesia (Dengue serotype-2).

Influenza

  • An outbreak of Influenza A is ongoing in RMI

Diarrhoea

  • Acute Diarrhoea and Vomiting (ADV), Rotavirus RDT-positive cases are reported in Kiribati this week. One death due to ADV has been investigated and reported.

Preliminary determination of novel coronavirus

  • Chinese authorities have made a preliminary determination of a novel (or new) coronavirus, identified in a hospitalized person with pneumonia in Wuhan, China. Chinese investigators conducted gene sequencing of the virus, using an isolate from one positive patient sample. [Source: WHO]

Ebola Virus Disease

  • Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): As of 7 January 2020, the cumulative number of Ebola cases is 3,392 (3,274 confirmed, 118 probable) from 29 health zones in North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri Provinces, including 2,235 deaths (CFR 66%). On 17 July 2019, the outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).
