In 2019, Bolivia lost more than 6 million hectares of forest and grassland to forest fires.

When Bolivia requested help with its fires, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism helped deploy a specialised team to support local authorities and volunteers.

The EU supported the Bolivian firefighters by providing items such as tents and water pumps to enable them to do their job. A team of 6 Swedish experts established a remote basecamp facility which could shelter 200 people in tents with electricity and water.

“This is a mission where you help the helpers,” says Bobby Rose, the Swedish team leader.

The EU team also built an operation centre and trained the local forces how to use it in the future.
