WHAT: Mission to the Republic of Niger

WHEN: 9-14 December 2019

WHERE: Niamey, Diffa, Maradi and Tillaberi

Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ursula Mueller, will visit Niger from 9 to 14 December 2019 to assess the humanitarian situation and response.

During the visit, Ms. Mueller is scheduled to meet with the President of the Republic of Niger,

H.E. Mr. Issoufou Mahamadou, the Prime Minister, H.E. Mr. Brigi Rafini, and other senior government officials. The ASG/DERC will also meet representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), United Nations agencies and the diplomatic community.

Ms. Mueller will travel to Diffa, Maradi and Tillaberi to meet people affected by the crisis and assess emergency relief operations to address the needs of more than 218,000 refugees and 187,000 internally displaced people.

An estimated 2.9 million people in Niger will need humanitarian assistance in 2020. Humanitarian partners in the country aim to assist 1.8 million people next year, an increase from the 1.6 million people targeted in 2019. The financial requirement to meet urgent needs in 2020 is US$407 million.
