The Supply Chain Management System's (SCMS) dedicated staff in Haiti has now distributed kits of medicines and other medical supplies from existing stock in the project warehouse to 16 hospitals and 14 clinical sites in Port-au-Prince. As of January 19, more than 40,000 pounds (18,000kg) of medicines and emergency medical supplies from warehouse stock had been distributed. Kits included: antibiotics (including co-trimoxazole), blood transfusion sets, exam lamps, first aid supplies (bandages, tape, alcohol wipes, cotton), ibuprofen, syringes and needles, and other essential drugs.

SCMS made its first routine resupply of antiretroviral AIDS medicines to a health facility. Without uninterrupted supply of antiretroviral medicines, patients will soon relapse and are at risk of developing drug resistant strains of AIDS.

The staff helped treat the wounded immediately after the earthquake. SCMS staff in Haiti and around the globe are determining other ways to contribute to the relief effort.

SCMS is a USAID-funded project that manages warehousing and distribution of HIV & AIDS commodities for the President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) in the country. SCMS is led by the Partnership for Supply Chain Management-a nonprofit organization with 17 international partners established by Cambridge-based Management Sciences for Health (MSH) and Boston-based John Snow, Inc.

"It is quite remarkable that within 48 hours following the catastrophic earthquake, the USAID SCMS team in Haiti had returned to the SCMS warehouse, determined it could be safely used, identified emergency requirements, and began shipments of emergency medicines and supplies to Port-au-Prince hospitals. Within the next three days, despite turmoil in the streets and occasional aftershocks, deliveries had been made to a total of fourteen Port-au-Prince hospitals, " said Dr. Jonathan Quick, President and CEO of MSH. "The courage and presence of mind of the SCMS Haiti team-in the face of personal losses and unimaginable devastation-is truly inspiring. SCMS worldwide is mobilized to provide all possible support to the Haitian relief effort," says Dr. Quick.

For over thirty years, MSH has been working in Haiti to help it improve the health of the Haitian people from the community level up to the Ministry of Health. In addition to SCMS, MSH has two other projects in Haiti, the SDSH (Santé pour le Développement et la Stabilité d'Haïti Project-Pwojé Djanm) and the Leadership, Management, and Sustainability Program.
