(New York, 14 January 2010) - The nation of Haiti is facing unimaginable suffering and loss following a devastating earthquake which has resulted in widespread and significant damage, especially in the heavily populated capital of Port-au-Prince. The Global Compact Office is deeply concerned for the millions of distressed children, women and men - and saddened by the presumed loss of thousands of people, including members of the UN family.

We are appealing to our business participants to support relief efforts. Companies are urged to visit to learn about specific financial and relief needs in the wake of this tragedy. This UN-Business partnership platform is designed to match the needs of UN organizations with the resources and capacities of the private sector in humanitarian emergencies such as this.

Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and this catastrophe will exacerbate the already critical situation for its people. In addition to rescue and recovery, there is immediate need for the provision of water, food, temporary shelter, and essential medical supplies. There will be a variety of needs - including in the medium- and long-term - determined in the coming days, weeks and months. Please periodically visit to check for updates on how your organization can help.

Disasters of this magnitude require the world's attention and support, and the international business community can play an important role in disaster relief and re-building. In the Global Compact spirit of shared responsibility for a better world, I urge your company to consider helping in such times of need.
