As of 27 October 2019, a total of 3,264 EVD cases were reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), including 3,147 confirmed and 117 probable cases, of which 2,181 cases died (overall case fatality ratio 67%). The incidence of new confirmed cases remained steady, with response teams strengthened in hotspot areas. In South Sudan, the total number of alerts reported and verified since the onset of the outbreak in DRC in August 2018 rose to 103. All laboratory tests proved negative, with no confirmed cases. PCR testing for EVD and a suite of 8 other pathogens commenced in Juba, with a subset of specimens sent to the Uganda Virus Research Institute for quality control. Feasibility assessments to establish sub-national laboratory capabilities in high-risk locations commenced.

A mid-term review of the second National EVD Preparedness Plan was completed under the auspices of the National Task Force, in conjunction with Technical Working Groups, State Task Forces and partners. Priorities and targets were reviewed, taking into account progress since the start of the plan in April, as well as challenges and funding availability. The life of the plan was extended to cover a nine-month period from April to December, and the financial requirement adjusted accordingly to some $16.7 million. Future planning cycles will align with those in the DRC, with the next preparedness plan expected to take effect from January 2020. A major new contribution from the World Bank through UNICEF, amongst others, increased funding coverage to around 94 per cent.
