Polio vaccination campaign highlights

In view of the current polio outbreak in the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) is organising polio vaccination campaigns in the National Capital Region (NCR) and in Mindanao.

  • The NCR campaign will have 2 rounds: 14-27 October and 25 November-7 December. Polioviruses were found in sewage in Tondo, Manila through environmental surveillance done by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM).

  • The Mindanao campaign will have 3 rounds on: 14-27 October, 25 November-7 December and 20 January - 2 February. Polio has paralyzed six children in Mindanao in four provinces, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sultan Kudarat and Cotabato. RITM also detected positive environmental samples from a waterway in Davao City. The first round was implemented in Davao City, Davao del Sur, and Lanao del Sur, whereas the 2 upcoming rounds will cover all regions in Mindanao (BARMM, IX, X, XI, XII, and XIII)
