Fourteenth Special Report of Session 2017–19

Ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 8 October 2019

Government response to DFID's work on disability report published

The International Development Committee has published the Government’s response to its report into DFID’s work on disability.

The report welcomed the Government’s Strategy for Disability-Inclusive Development but called for a renewed focus in embedding disability in all its work, alongside disability-specific projects. It further called for dedicated work in key areas to help remove barriers to accessing education, improve participation in economic and social life, combat stigma and discrimination and support mental health.

The Government partially or wholly accepted 22 out of the report’s 24 recommendations.

Chair's comments

Chair of the International Development Committee, Stephen Twigg MP said:

“We are pleased that the Government has responded so positively to our report and we look forward to seeing how DFID progresses in the areas it has committed to in the coming months.

“DFID’s commitment to regularly monitor the progress of their business units against inclusion standards will help provide a better understanding of how effective the two-strand approach to disability inclusion is, where more work is needed, and best practice shared.

“DFID should continue to lead on disability-inclusive development globally and build on the momentum created by the Global Disability Summit last year.”
