The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have decided to extend the Portuguese aid in response to the dengue fever outbreak in Cape Verde, by sending a second medical assistance team November 17, to relieve the first team of four doctors and four nurses in the country since November 7, who will now return home.

This second team consists of two internal medicine doctors and three nurses from the same Coimbra University Hospitals (HUC) Intensive Care unit as the first team. Headed by HUC Infectious Diseases specialist Eugenia Ferreira, the team will remain in Cape Verde for eight to ten days.

A second batch of medicines, including antibiotics will be sent to Cape Verde the same day. Last week, Portugal made available a batch of medicines and equipment such as vital functions monitors and medical ventilators.

This Cooperation aid follows the Cape Verde Government's appeal for international assistance in response to the serious outbreak of dengue fever in the country which according to the latest figures available, has already affected more than 16 thousand people.

The Portuguese Government will remain vigilant to the latest developments and to the need for further assistance.
