BEIJING (Reuter) - Typhoon Zita killed seven people and injured 349 when it battered China's southern province of Guangdong last week, leaving thousands homeless, local officials said on Monday.

The typhoon caused $326.5 million in direct economic losses, damaging 822,000 acres of crops, when it slammed into the Leizhou peninsula on the southern tip of the province on Friday, officials said.

The storm left seven people dead and injured 349 in the port of Zhanjiang, they said. It affected 5.65 million people when it spawned heavy rains that flooded towns and cut electricity and telephone lines, Zhanjiang city officials said.

The second typhoon to batter China in a week destroyed 36,300 houses in Zhanjiang, damaged banana and sugarcane crops and flooded most of Zhanjiang's fish and shrimp ponds, the China Daily said.

Around 54,000 people were evacuated from the Leizhou peninsula, the newspaper said.

Typhoon Zita swept into northern Vietnam on Saturday, and authorities there reported no casualties or serious damage.

China's eastern province of Zhejiang was lashed by Typhoon Winnie a week earlier. The storm killed at least 140 people and injured more than 3,000 as it raged across the province.

Typhoon Winnie's heavy winds and rain damaged 1.83 million acres of farmland, officials said.
