In brief

Programme purpose: The International Federation supported programmes in the West Coast region aim at assisting the National Societies in the region to alleviate the suffering of the vulnerable populations within the framework of the Federation's Global Agenda and in line with ARCHI 2010.

Programme(s) summary: The National Societies covered by this appeal update could not effectively implement most of the activities planned for this reporting period because of late or non-availability of funding. However, some emergency operations were carried out in the areas of Disaster Management, Health and Care and Organizational Development. Some National Societies in the region also carried out some bilateral programmes/projects during the first half of 2009.

In Disaster Management, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) with support from the Federation assisted the Bakassi returnees in the southern part of Nigeria. The Red Cross of Benin on its part, provided assistance to victims of the severe storm in Benin during the first half of the year while the Togolese Red Cross mobilized its team of volunteers for cholera operation in the country in January. The Red Cross Society of Côte d'Ivoire worked on its disaster risk reduction project for schools during this period. In Health and Care, National Societies of Côte d'Ivoire, Sierra Leone and Ghana continued to implement their Public Health in Emergency projects. Côte d'Ivoire and Nigeria carried out activities in the area of water and sanitation (watsan) while the H2P projects of the NRCS, Red Cross of Benin and Ghana Red Cross Society recorded some progress during this reporting period. Polio eradication campaigns were carried out in Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Sierra Leone, Togo and Nigeria. The Nigerian Red Cross Society carried out some activities under its Global Alliance HIV/AIDS project while other National Societies continued to carry out sensitization and awareness activities against the disease. With the outbreak of Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, National Societies in the region carried out preparedness activities against the pandemic during this reporting period. In Organizational Development, the Nigerian Red Cross Society with support from the West Coast regional office continued to strengthen the capacity of the leadership of the National Society. The National Societies of Côte d'Ivoire and Sierra Leone have organized their partnership meetings during this period. The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society organized its General Assembly meeting during the first quarter of the year and elected a new governance team for the National Society. The National Societies in the region continued to promote the humanitarian principles and values as the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society scaled up its rehabilitation and empowerment activities to the children and people affected by the war in that country. Some planned activities could not be implemented due to funding constraint during the first quarter of this year. It is expected that these activities shall be given priorities during the second half of the year.

Financial situation: The total budget for 2009-2010 is CHF 9,882,113 of which 39 per cent covered (CHF 3,856,206). Expenditure overall was 16 per cent (CHF 1,583,687).

No. of people we help: An estimated 900,000 people including children benefited directly from secretariat-supported programme interventions during the reporting period.

Our partners: Apart from the partners of the West Coast regional office such as the Swedish Red Cross, Irish Red Cross, Finnish Red Cross, other Movement partners worked on bilateral with National Societies in the region. Other partners include the British Red Cross, Netherlands Red Cross, Japanese Red Cross and ICRC. UNICEF, WHO, WFP, DFID, Swedish Civil Contingency Agency (SCCA). The Belgian Red Cross, Nestlé and Shell supported projects in the region during the first half of 2009. National Societies also worked in partnership with other corporate organizations and government agencies in their respective countries. The West Coast regional office will continue to give support to National Societies for more potential partners and donors.
