The National Emergency Management Agency has disclosed that it registered about 3500 displaced people from the Warri Crisis just as it distributed materials worth N30 million to alleviate their suffering following the unfortunate outbreak of crises between the Joint Task Force (JTF) and Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in Gbaramatu Kingdom of Warri South West Local Government Area that led to the displacement of citizens.

The Director General of NEMA AVM Mohammed Audu-Bida made the disclosure (June 24, 2009) during a public hearing of Ad-hoc Committee on the Niger Delta Crisis of House of Representatives. He said that immediately after NEMA set up the camp few international NGO visited the camp to commiserate with the victims while no any multinational firm provide relief materials to victims at the Internally Displaced People Camp (IDPC).

He observed that delegations to the camp included Doctors Without Borders, International Committee of Red Cross, Rural African Health Initiative (RAHI), Ambassadors Chaplain Corps and various media houses both Local and International.

Audu-Bida said the NEMA in collaboration with State Rehabilitation Committee delivered materials to the victims trapped in the various communities. He pointed out that the camp stabilized with total registration of IDP's of about 3500 (Three thousand, five hundred) persons before the State Committee directed the relocation of the camp to the General Hospital Ogbe-Ijoh which was underutilized.

The NEMA Boss pointed out that since responding to emergencies is a multi jurisdictional, multi disciplinary, multi sectoral and multi resource business all jurisdictions tiers of government should have necessary machinery to be able to respond to disasters at all times. The State Should as a matter of urgency establishes and equips the State Emergency Management Agency.

The NEMA boss who listed various food items, clothing and other relief materials delivered by NEMA valued at about N30 million said that had it been the Delta State has a functional State Emergency Management Agency like other states; it could have made a lot of difference.

In his opening remark, the Chairman Adhoc Committee on Niger- Delta Abdul Ningi and most members of the Committee including Jumoke Okoya Thomas and Dr. Shehu Matazu commended NEMA for its prompt intervention and proactive approaches during the crisis by penetrating the creek to assist the displaced people with foods, medication and relief materials.

The legislators did not spare the oil companies operating in the area for their lackadaisical attitudes to the displaced people in the area as they were also present at the briefing most especially NNPC, Shell and Chevron.
