The Chief Medical Officer reported today that the Department of Health has recorded a laboratory confirmed case of influenza A (H1N1). He noted that 13 year old visitor to the island was seen in the Emergency Room at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital within the last two weeks with symptoms suggestive of influenza. Appropriate diagnostic tests were collected and he was treated with an antiviral medication. He was kept in isolation over night and subsequently released to his hotel on voluntary isolation for a further 24 hour period.

A public Health Nurse from the Department of Health monitored his status. As his clinical condition improved he was released from isolation and was allowed to travel back to his home. He continued to make a full recovery after his return.

No family contacts or other contacts developed any symptoms.

A laboratory specimen forwarded to the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) has been reported as positive for Influenza A (H1N1).

There have been no other cases of influenza A (H1N1) recorded on the island.

The Department of Health has notified the appropriate international health authorities.
