  • Severe weather, including heavy rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms have been affecting several states over the past few days, causing casualties and damage.
  • The unseasonal rain coupled with thunderstorm and lightning, hit several parts of the 4 Indian states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra overnight on 16 April, killing over 50 people.
  • Damage to property and crops in Gujarat and Rajasthan has also been reported.
  • Media also reported that the Prime Minister’s Office has announced that INR 200,000 (EUR 2 571) for the next of kin of those who lost their lives due to unseasonal rain and storms in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur and various parts of the country has been approved from the PM’s National Relief Fund. INR 50,000 (EUR 643) each for the injured has also been approved.
  • Additionally, the Rajasthan State Government has also announced INR 400,000 (EUR 5 143) as compensation for each of the bereaved families.
  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rain with thunderstorms is forecast in the southern, eastern and north-eastern states of the country.
