India: Heat wave toll in Orissa rises to 120

NEW DELHI -Orissa remained under the grip of heat wave which claimed seven more lives on Saturday taking the death toll in the state to 120 as West Bengal's capital Kolkata recorded the highest day temperature in seven years and mercury stayed above 40 degrees in most parts of northern India.

The hottest place in Orissa was Sambalpur which recorded 45.3 degrees Celsius followed by Talchar 45.2 degrees and Titlagarh 45 degrees.

Authorities in West Bengal, where 25 people were hospitalised due to heat-related illnesses, renewed the heat wave warning in the state for another 24 hours. The temperature rose to 42.1 degrees in Kolkata making it the hottest day in seven years.

In Bankura and West Midnapore districts, the mercury climbed to 45 degrees and 44 degrees respectively.

There was no respite from the scorching sun in Uttar Pradesh where Varanasi remained the hottest place witnessing maximum temperature of 43 degrees. Lucknow experienced a high of 41 degrees and Allahabad 41.9 degrees.

However, weather remained pleasant in Himachal Pradesh with temperature at various places in the state remaining below 17 degrees with queen of hills Shimla registering 13.1 degrees.
