At approximately 7pm on Saturday, 13 April 2019, a family feud broke out between two families in Al-Rabee’ Wedding Hall in Al Nuseirat refugee camp in the Middle Gaza district. Small arms were used in the feud and resulted in the injury of Zakaria Abu Hashish, 47, a resident of Al-Zawayda village in the same district. Zakaria, an invitee to the wedding who happened to be at the place of the feud, was shot with a live bullet in the chest. Five more people, including two children and a woman, were injured from live fire. The casualties were taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah town, where doctors announced the death of Zakaria later on the same day. A police force arrived at the scene, detained a number of suspects, and reportedly launched an investigation.

Documentation by Al Mezan Center for Human Rights shows that from the start of 2019, 58 incidents of internal violence and deterioration of the rule of law in Gaza have been recorded. Seven persons died and 49 suffered injuries in these incidents.

Extending condolences to the family of the victim, Al Mezan expresses deep concern by the growing number of victims of internal violence, and warns against serious repercussions of this trend on the public safety of Palestinians in Gaza. Al Mezan demands that a thorough and credible investigation is launched into this incident, as well as all similar incidents, and taking the necessary legal proceedings against those who violated the law and caused injury and harm to people and who are found to have used small arms and light weapons in this type of incidents.

Al Mezan reiterates the urgent call for proper enforcement of the rule of law and for appropriate legal action against perpetuators of such crimes or taking the law into their hands. Al Mezan stresses that more effective gun control measures need be enforced in Gaza.
