On 8 April 2019, emergency relief goods provided by the Government of Japan for the people affected by Cyclone Idai were handed over to the Government of Zimbabwe. The goods consist of 300 camp tents, 320 portable jerry cans, 8 water purifiers, 20 000 sets of water treatment chemicals, 30 rolls of plastic tarpaulins, 30 generators, 30 cord reels and 70 plugin adaptors. They were provided through JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), and will be distributed by WFP in close cooperation with the Government of Zimbabwe. The Ambassador of Japan to Zimbabwe, H.E. Mr Toshiyuki Iwado, officially handed over the goods to the Deputy Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Hon. Jennifer Mhlanga. Ambassador Iwado mentioned that, having experienced many natural disasters themselves, the people of Japan understood the suffering experienced by victims of natural disasters and therefore wished to provide assistance. The Country Representative of the World Food Programme, Mr Eddie Rowe, gave his assurances that the emergency goods would reach the people most in need within the shortest possible time, with some of the goods being delivered to the cut-off areas of Chimanimani by air.
